Missouri Emissions Inspections Explained (Pass Your Emissions Test Today)

Missouri Readiness Monitors Explained | Pass Your Emissions Test

Missouri Readiness Monitors: What You Need to Pass Emissions

Looking for the best auto repair shop in St. Louis? Sant Automotive helps drivers in Webster Groves, Affton, Crestwood, and South St. Louis County pass emissions testing quickly and avoid repeat visits.

Short answer:

  • 2001 and newer vehicles: Only 1 “Not Ready” monitor allowed
  • 1996–2000 vehicles: Up to 2 “Not Ready” monitors allowed

If you exceed those limits, your vehicle will fail—even if nothing is technically “broken.”

What Are Readiness Monitors?

Readiness monitors are self-tests your vehicle performs to ensure emissions systems are working properly.

These include systems like:

  • Catalyst
  • EVAP system
  • Oxygen sensors

If these monitors are not complete, the state considers your emissions system unverified.

Missouri Emissions Readiness Rules

Missouri allows a small number of incomplete monitors:

  • 1996–2000 gasoline vehicles: up to 2 incomplete monitors
  • 2001 and newer gasoline vehicles: only 1 incomplete monitor

This is one of the most common reasons vehicles fail emissions testing in St. Louis.

Common Reason for “Not Ready” Monitors

The most common cause is:

  • Recently cleared check engine light
  • Battery disconnected

When this happens, your vehicle resets its emissions system—and all monitors go back to “Not Ready.”

If your check engine light is on, your vehicle will not pass. Learn more in our emissions inspection guide.

The Catalyst Code “Gotcha”

If your vehicle has catalyst-related trouble codes (P0420–P0439), readiness becomes even more important.

This means:

  • The issue must be repaired
  • The monitor must run and complete successfully

Simply clearing codes will not solve the problem.

What If You Fail Due to Monitors?

If you fail only because monitors are not ready, Missouri allows a 30-day extension to complete drive cycles.

This gives you time to:

  • Drive the vehicle under normal conditions
  • Allow monitors to complete
  • Return for retesting

How to Get Monitors Ready Faster

To complete readiness monitors:

  • Drive a mix of city and highway miles
  • Avoid clearing codes before testing
  • Allow multiple drive cycles

Some systems (especially EVAP) can take longer to complete.

Fast Emissions Testing in St. Louis

Once your vehicle is ready, the emissions test itself is quick.
